Small Group Lesson Plan- March 18th: The Book of John 11:1-16
John 11 is such a pivotal and powerful chapter in the gospel of John. Seemingly the entirety of Jesus’ ministry is building to this point, and we’ll see how things take a turn after the events that unfold in this chapter that set in course the events that lead to his betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection.
Read John 11:1-16
What stands out to you in verses 1-5? How might we describe Jesus’ heart posture towards Martha, Mary, and Lazarus?
His response to the news of Lazarus’ condition in verse 6 seems like such a contrast to his stated feelings towards this family in verse 5. What else in verse 5 might explain his response?
How do these two verses land on you? Have you ever dealt with a verse 6 response from God to an issue or problem you’ve faced?
Read John 11:7-16
Jesus’ disciples point out the risk associated with his decision to go help Lazarus. There was no way to sneak into Judea and heal a sick man, especially after how things had gone the last time they were in that city. The risk doesn’t deter Jesus, he is going to Judea, with or without his team, and if you’re Lazarus this is good news. But what about if you are a disciple? Have you ever been in a position where you were Lazarus or maybe on the other side of things and facing what the disciples thought to be certain death (verse 16) by following Jesus? Mind you, the risk we face in following Jesus isn’t always a physical death, we might also face somewhat of a social death. Ridicule because of our decision to follow Christ or maybe being cutoff or removed from a group of people because of our faith. How have you navigated that? Could there be a moment right now that God’s calling you to follow him, really follow him at the risk of losing something important to you for his glory? Read Genesis 22:9-14 to think of another situation from scripture to relate to this.
