Small Group Lesson Plan for June 3rd: John 16:1-16
John Ch16: 1-16
Jesus opens this passage with a tender act of love: He warns His disciples. He knows what is coming—rejection, exile, even death—and He refuses to let them face it uninformed. “These things I have spoken to you so that you will not stumble” (v. 1). God does not always remove our trials, but He faithfully equips us for them.
How often do we feel blindsided by hardship? Jesus reminds us that nothing in our lives falls outside His knowledge or concern. The storms we walk through have been foreseen by the One who walks with us through them.
• Where in your life can you trust that God has prepared you for what lies ahead?
In verse 7, Jesus says something astonishing: “It is to your advantage that I go away.” How could losing Jesus in the flesh possibly be good? Because His departure made way for the arrival of the Holy Spirit—the Helper, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth. And the one who will convict and judge the world of sin!
The Spirit does not merely visit; He dwells within every believer, guiding us into all truth (v. 13). When Jesus walked the earth, He could only be in one place at a time. Through the Spirit, He is present with every follower, in every moment, in every corner of the world. That is not loss—that is abundance.
The disciples’ hearts were filled with sorrow (v. 6). They could only see what they were losing. Jesus gently corrects their gaze—not by dismissing their grief, but by pointing them toward a hope that transcends it. Sorrow is not the end of the story. It often creates opportunity for our faith to take root.
• Are there circumstances that feel like loss, but may actually be a way through which God’s Spirit is moving?
Over the years I’ve definitely been in the disciples’ shoes. Not understanding that hardship actually has a purpose, and that God is still in charge through it all. In addition, the result of what I went through made me stronger, and closer to Him. It also struck me about 5 years ago that I knew about the Holy Spirit, but I didn’t really know the Holy Spirit. That led me on a quest to dig in on scripture and realize how important this piece of the Trinity is, and how available it is to each one of us!
• What is one way you can take a step closer in your relationship with the Holy Spirit?
